Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
